What is it? : Fibreglass or grp (glass reinforced plastic) is a composite material made of glass fibres and plastic polyester resins. The glass brings high tensile (stretchable/flexible) strength to the mixture. The plastic supplies the opposite quality of strong compressive strength (support heavy loads). Such a combination makes fibreglass a truly remarkable production material.
A Cool Youngster: In the history of construction materials it is a fairly recent addition. Fibreglass was first commercially produced in 1938 as a home insulation product. The low thermal conductivity of grp is another of its plus properties.
Keeping the Lights on: The power industry is turning to fibreglass to line its piping systems and cooling towers. Fibreglass's benefits of low life cycle costs, longevity and durability in extremely corrosive environments are pushing this trend.
Rock 'N Roll: An inventor of a 'Sea-gyro' which stabilizes small boats against the rock and roll of wave motion houses his invention in a fibreglass moulding for its sound insulation property. Who says rock 'n roll has to be loud!
