And it is not just packaging waste that is being recycled. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive came into force in 2007 and aims to increase the recycling of familiar household appliances, from refrigerators and washing machines, to mobile phones and printers. Around 1 million tonnes of equipment enters the UK waste stream each year; approximately 50 percent is recovered.
