Grade 9

Titanium is an exciting material because there are dozens of options. They include commercially pure Grades, popular alloys, and specialist alloys for niche applications. Impressively, some of the materials only have very slight differences in the compositions. That can have a big impact on their properties though. It gives people more options when specifying what to use for applications.

 

Grade 9 titanium was developed specifically for aerospace use. Before it, engineers had a conundrum; pure Grades did not provide enough strength while strong alloys like Grade 5 had less formability. The latter meant it was difficult to create products like tubing for hydraulic systems, fuel lines, and other parts.

 

The solution here was relatively simple in retrospect. The key was to reduce the amount of aluminium and vanadium in the alloy. Instead of the 6% Al and 4% V in Grade 5, Grade 9 has 3% Al and 2.5% V. This provides the ideal combination of properties, including a balance of strength and formability while retaining the excellent corrosion resistance. A key benefit

Although the main idea was to ensure Grade 9 was stronger than CP Grades but more formable than Grade 5, it also offers a significant benefit. The formability means manufacturers can create thin wall tubing. It is possible to do this with cold drawing, avoiding the need to heat the material. The result is thin tube that is still very strong and able to resist high pressures. So, it could save a lot of weight.

 

Weight reduction has been a key goal in the aerospace industry for decades. It’s important for improving fuel economy (it takes more fuel to launch heavier planes, rockets, and satellites). Using thinner, lighter tubes is fantastic. Crucially, using Grade 9 means you don’t compromise on strength and load bearing capacity.

 

Another advantage

A big challenge with aerospace is components have to be able to withstand repeated stress cycles. The goal is to prevent failures that could cause disasters. Many materials struggle here, suffering fatigue over time and developing cracks. Generally titanium is a very good choice for these applications. Grade 9 titanium tubing is the best option for many parts, including structural tubing.

 

The key thing about Grade 9 is the titanium has a fantastic micro-structure. It is called near-alpha because it is mainly hexagonal alpha crystals but with small amounts of beta vanadium stabilising elements. This is significant as it ensures the material can flex slightly without the formation of micro-cracks. Ultimately, it provides outstanding fatigue resistance, perfect for aerospace.

 

Costs

The development of Grade 9 titanium also helped to address cost issues. Typically CP Grades are the cheapest because you don’t need to use any exotic materials. As you start to add to them to create alloys, you increase the costs. For example, Grade 7 can be one of the most expensive alloys because it contains a small amount of palladium, one of the most valuable precious metals in the world.

 

Significantly, Grade 9 is cheaper than Grade 5 thanks to the reduction of aluminium and vanadium. Plus, keep in mind that when energy prices are higher, it can massively increase the costs of producing different metals, including Al. The formability also means it is cheaper to create products like Grade 9 titanium tubing, particularly complex designs.

 

Applications

As we said, Grade 9 titanium was developed for aerospace use. It’s still one of the leading materials in the industry. The characteristics make it almost unbeatable for many applications, including tubes for hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel lines, heat exchangers, and structural elements.

 

Interestingly though, the things that make Grade 9 so fantastic for aerospace also make it useful for many other applications. For example, it is great for sporting equipment (including bicycles), chemical processing equipment, healthcare equipment, and many niche areas. It’s fantastic for marine use too, particularly offshore where weight saving and corrosion resistance are vital.
